BPI group’s Annual 2020 Executive Employment Trends Report provides insights into the current state of the executive job market. 2020 was a tumultuous year with multiple national and global crises converging. Chief among them, COVID-19 took its toll on the economy with dramatic job losses and wide swings in unemployment. One might think there would be stark differences comparing executive job search trends from 2019 to 2020, but our executive landings were slightly faster than in 2019. Our Executive Career Transition coaches attribute this to many factors, including higher turnover for senior roles, fewer geographical restrictions, and a higher comfort level with online/virtual job search techniques.
Additional report trends and coach insights include:
- Networking continues to be the top source of job opportunities, but fell slightly due to the lack of in-person networking events
- A 15-point increase over three years in executives taking new organizational roles (as opposed to starting a business)
- Younger executives took longer to land, reflecting increased competition from more seasoned talent in the market
- Certain industries are experiencing significant growth
The 2020 Annual Executive Employment Trends Report also includes analysis of the average length of the executive job search, as well as how the job search is impacted by an executive’s base salary level, education level, and age.
